From our member James Williams comes this:
Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar will be in Fresno tomorrow speaking about issues that most likely center on water here in the San Joaquin Valley. This will be a 90-minute town hall meeting at the Satellite Student Union on the campus of CSU Fresno. Come early so you can stand in line longer, but have a better chance of getting in.
If you can not make it, such is the case with me, let someone else know so they can fill the seat. In this day and age water is not just a solvent anymore, and with him talking to the local congress critters first, we will end up with a peripheral canal and a dam at Temperance Flat. Unless we show up and vocalize our disapproval of those two ideas they will have more well-placed allies on the issue.
Secretary Salazar's town hall meeting is scheduled 2:30-4 p.m. tomorrow, June 28, at the CSU Fresno Satellite Student Union. Hope you all can make it.
Thanks for the info, James!
| Our next meeting: MONDAY, Feb. 13, 2012; Time 7 pm; UC Center, 550 E. Shaw, across from Fashion Fair Shopping Center. See meeting details below. |

V4CF needs marchers and booth staffers for health information rally Saturday, June 27
In conjunction with Organizing For America's 'National Healthcare Day of Service', Volunteers For Change-Fresno members are invited to participate in the Youth and Community Health March, scheduled 7:15 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Saturday, June 27.
Sponsored by Helping Our Own Destiny (HOOD), the event will feature a march from the Kearny Palms Shopping Center to City Hall, as well as an information fair for AIDS awareness and prevention in City Hall Plaza after the march.
Volunteers for Change-Fresno members are invited to participate in both the march and the health fair afterward by staffing our health-fair booth. Booth activities will include registering voters, providing information about healthcare reform, and children's activities, such as games and coloring-book pages focused on health and safety.
Planning to march? Assemble at 7:15 a.m. outside the Kearny Palms Shopping Center, at the corner of Fresno and C Streets near downtown. The march is scheduled to begin at 7:30 a.m., and will proceed along a roughly one-mile route to City Hall Plaza in downtown Fresno.
Staffing the booth? To help set up the booth, meet at 8 a.m. at City Hall Plaza. V4CF members marching are also invited to help staff the booth during the health fair at one of two shifts, beginning at either 8 a.m. or 10:30 a.m. We also plan to help clean up City Hall Plaza by picking up trash after the events.
Want to participate? Contact V4CF event organizer Kris Arden at (559) 978-1736 or via e-mail. Please let Kris know if you plan to participate as a marcher, a booth staffer, or both. If you plan to staff the booth, also let Kris know whether you prefer the 8 a.m. or 10:30 a.m. shift.
We hope to see you there Saturday!

Healthcare reform Call to Action scheduled this Thursday, June 25, at Sen. Feinstein's offices
As promised at our most recent Volunteers For Change-Fresno meeting, we're invited to participate in a Call to Action in support of healthcare reform.
That action? As part of a statewide effort this Thursday, all V4CF members are invited to participate in a rally outside the Fresno office of Senator Diane Feinstein, who despite being one of the most influential Senators on Capitol Hill has remained silent about President Obama's healthcare-reform efforts.
Called "The Rally for Health Reform and Against Budget Cuts to Health," this Call to Action is scheduled 9:30 a.m. Thursday, June 25, outside Senator Feinstein's office at 2500 E. Tulare St. in downtown Fresno.
Jessica Rothhaar of Health Access -- the same organization that brought Linda Leu to Fresno to speak with V4CF about healthcare reform June 9 -- is the event's organizer. Jessica will arrange for several speakers to participate, and will lead the small group that plans to meet with Senator Feinstein's staff at 10:30 that morning. Health Access will also hold a press conference during the rally, designed to gain attention for supporting healthcare reform now.
Participants are encouraged to bring and display their banners in support of the "public option." Also, Jessica is seeking three volunteers with clipboards to circulate petitions asking lawmakers support the "public option" in healthcare reform. The completed petitions will be sent to Senator Feinstein after the rally. She's also looking for someone willing to take photos at the event. Willing to help? Let us know.
Nearby street parking is metered, so you may want to bring some coins along.
Want to participate? Contact Nancy Griesser at (559) 325-1616 or via e-mail. We hope to see you there Thursday!

First Lady Michelle Obama calls on Americans to serve their communities this summer
From our friends at United We Serve, a new office for volunteerism facilitated by the White House.
President Obama has said that the challenges we face are unprecedented, and that we need to build a new foundation for economic growth in America. The Administration has begun this work with dramatic new investments in education, health care and clean energy, but we cannot do this alone here in Washington.
Today marks the kickoff of United We Serve, the administration's nationwide summer of service initiative. With the knowledge that ordinary people can achieve extraordinary things when given the proper tools, this initiative aims to both expand the impact of existing organizations and encourage people like you and me to develop our own "do-it-yourself" service projects.
