AMA endorses House Democrats' healthcare bill,
including the public option

Positive news on the healthcare-reform front, From Yahoo News:

The American Medical Association on Thursday endorsed a liberal health overhaul bill that includes a public insurance option, a bold step for a traditionally conservative group with a checkered past on health reforms.

In its strongest action yet signaling support for President Barack Obama's vow to reform health care, the nation's largest doctors' group sent letters to three House committees behind the bill. The letters, signed by AMA's executive vice president, Dr. Michael Maves, said the AMA appreciates and supports what is being called America's Affordable Health Choices Act.

Another way to support the Aug. 15
'Back to School Health Fair'

If you are unable to participate in the event on Aug. 15, another way you can support the "Back to School Health Fair" is by donating a backpack and/or the supplies to go in them. You are also welcome to make a donation towards the purchase of school supplies and/or volunteer on that day.

School children will be receiving backpacks with supplies at the event. Last year they gave out 1000 backpacks, so donations are greatly needed and gladly welcomed.

Regarding backpacks:

  • Backpacks should be the age and size appropriate.
  • Backpacks for 7th – 12th graders cannot be red or blue due to the gang color issue.
Supplies needed according to grade level:
  • K - 3rd Pencil boxes, crayons, pencils, folders, erasers
  • 4th – 6th Pencil pouches, pens, pencils, folders, binders, note books, paper, rulers
  • 7th – 8th Binders, paper, note books, pens, pencils
  • 9th – 12th Binders, paper, pencils, pens

Many stores should be having some good sales on school supplies. Anything you can contribute will be greatly appreciated.

The backpacks and supplies must be turned in two weeks prior to the event. If you would like to make a donation please have it ready by July 31st.

Backpack Collection Coordinator: Wendy Negri (299-5052 or email wnegri@att.net)

Wendy is collecting all donated school supplies and will deliver them to the West Fresno Health Care Coalition. Please call or email her to make arrangements to drop off the supplies or if you have any questions.

Remember: All donations are needed by July 31.

Call our Senators and Representatives now
to support meaningful healthcare reform

With the House and Senate both working on their own versions of healthcare reform legislation, and with the details of any final bill far away from being decided, it's still important that we who are interested in meaningful healthcare reform call our Representatives and Senators to express that support.

In fact, with the issue heating up and with both houses of Congress taking action, calling now is probably more important than ever.

So when you make those call, what do you say? Well, according to Organizing for America (OFA), the evolution of the group that ran President Obama's successful election campaign last year, the three principles of healthcare reform are:
  • Reducing rising costs for families, business and government;

  • Allowing all patients choice in their own coverage and their own doctor; and

  • Ensuring that quality, affordable healthcare is available to all Americans.
OFA describes these principles in more detail in this document. Or, for more detailed information you can share with your Senators and Representatives, download this document created last year by the Obama/Biden campaign. (That last document is in Adobe PDF format, so you'll need the free Adobe Reader to view it.)

Then, smile and dial. Here's how to call those serving the Fresno area:

Representatives:

George Radanovich - District 19
Local: 559-449-2490
Washington, D.C.: 202-225-4540

Jim Costa - District 20
Local: 559-495-1620
Washington, D.C.: 202-225-3341

Devin Nunes – District 21
Local: 559-323-5235
Washington D.C.: (202) 225-2523

Senators:

Diane Feinstein
Local: (559) 485-7430
Washington, D.C.: (202) 224-3841

Barbara Boxer
Local: (559) 497-5109
Washington, D.C.: (202) 224-3553

Let's help to implement this important facet of the change we demanded last November. Now is the time.

President Obama:
Healthcare status quo is not an option

From our friends at Whitehouse.gov:

Today, July 15, President Obama was joined by members of the American Nurses Association in the Rose Garden, where he spoke strongly on the urgent need for health care reform. He explained that the status quo is not an option, and that deferring reform is akin to defending that status quo.

The President stated again that rising costs are unsustainable, which is why reform benefits all Americans, whether they are insured or not. The President also assured that those who like their health care can keep it, and reform will save you money by bringing down costs, providing more choices, and keeping insurance companies honest. Inaction is not an option, but real progress is being made.

Phonebanking for healthcare reform
begins Wednesday, July 15

As announced at our Volunteers For Change-Fresno meeting July 7, we're inviting our members to participate in a phonebanking effort, to encourage our fellow Fresnans to call their Senators and Representatives and express their support for meaningful healthcare reform now.

On three Wednesday evenings this month -- July 15, July 22 and July 29 -- we'll get together to call locally, encouraging our neighbors to contact California's Representatives and Senators to support President Obama's principles for meaningful healthcare reform, including the public option.

We'll be making our calls 6-9 p.m. from Room 134 of the Lab School at Fresno State University, on Keats Ave. west of Maple, in east Fresno.

To participate, sign up at http://my.barackobama.com/page/event/detail/gpcrw2. Training and scripts will be provided, and other phonebankers will be there for mutual support. Bring your cell phone, your enthusiasm and your persistence.

Or, as event organizer Connie Peterson says, "It's great company and great fun. If you have never phone banked before, it is easier than you think--please give it a try! Come for all three hours or for however long you can spare."

We hope to see you there!

Groups planning budget rally
at Governor's Fresno office July 15

From our friends at ACORN and Health Access comes this invitation:

The Fresno CLC, along with ACORN and Health Access, is organizing a rally at Governor Schwarzenegger's Fresno office to protest his indifference to the suffering being caused by budget cuts, and all community members are invited to join them.

Our organizing goals are:

1) To attach a local, human face to the consequences of the Governor’s proposed cuts to health, human services and education.

2) To call for a solution that does not place the whole burden of balancing the budget on those most in need of public services.

3) To persuade the Governor and Central Valley legislators to accept a balanced solution that includes revenues.

The rally is scheduled 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Wednesday, July 15, outside the Governor's Fresno office, 2550 Mariposa Mall, in Fresno.

To participate, please send an e-mail message to Jessica Rothaar of Health Access at jessicar@health-access.org. Tell 'em Volunteers For Change-Fresno sent you!

Recovery and the jobs of the future

From our friends at Whitehouse.gov:

In his weekly address, President Obama explains how the Recovery Act helped end our economic free fall, and how his agenda is helping to set a new foundation for our economy. From healthcare reform to energy, to creating the jobs of the future, the President’s proposals will make our economy stronger for both the current generations and for our children, all in a way that will get our deficits under control.
